Are Aldi's Mattress in a Box worth buying?

Originally a lot of the reviews are of ALDI's ‘Estelle Mattress’ that is $149 to $249 (queen) but this is only available during special periods. However, ALDI offers the SOHL Mattress, available in queen size only for $499, is it really worth buying?

Need to know

According to our tests, the bed-in-a-box industry consistently produces better value products than traditional brick-and-mortar stores. We review the Aldi mattress and compare it to popular online retailers, we examine the pros and cons.

In this guide, our mattress experts explain the pros and cons of bed-in-a-box mattresses and how Aldi's mattress compares to other brands on the market.

Purchase and delivery

ALDI's Estelle Mattress falls into the category of mattress in a box, and it is only available during certain special buy periods, and even then, it is not available in all stores. We are reviewing the SOHL Mattress, which is available for purchase online.

As with other bed in a box reviews, this mattress is compressed by heavy machinery into  a cardboard box. Aldi delivers to selected postcodes in NSW, VIC & QLD within 2-4 days which is an improvement over the last mattress that they didn't deliver.

The price of this model is $499 which puts it in the same price range as a lot of the premium mattress you can purchase. In Fact we have made a list of the best cheap mattress in a box brands in Australia that would compare great to this. Check it out.

In our experience, we recommend that two people be available to unpack the mattress. But removing the ALDI Mattress from its packaging shouldn't be too much trouble. Unpacking this mattress should take less than 10 minutes, and you should let it decompress for 24  hours before sleeping on it.

Comfort and support

The big change in this mattress is that it is made entirely from foam instead of springs. While our reviewer hasn't tried this model and there aren't many reviews on it, we cannot comment on its comfort on a first hand experience. However, we'll help you understand what to expect by breaking down the layers.

Aldi's SOHL mattress is made of latex, memory foam, and polyurethane The materials are better than Big W mattress in a box, but the price is higher. Despite the fact that you have these materials, I suspect this will be a very hot mattress because there doesn't seem to be any way  to dissipate the heat effectively, and an all-foam mattress containing memory foam is bound to get hot without the proper construction.

Aesthetically, the ALDI Mattress looks a bit like the Koala mattress. It uses a white and blue colour scheme without handles and has a removable and washable cover that will help keep your mattress fresh longer.

Finer details

Furthermore, the materials do not have certifications for checking for harmful chemicals. If you  are considering this mattress, I suggest consulting the company's return policy to learn more about the 1-year warranty and 60-day return.

Upon looking through it, I noticed it states that you can return the items to the store. Then it says that the cost of delivery and return will be taken off the refund amount. My guess is that they will not pick up your items. The policy states that your products must be undamaged and returned in their original packaging, which will not be possible with a mattress in a box after the original packaging has been removed.

Final verdict

This is a big one as you can't trial it in-store. You'll have to save the 'lie down and see how it feels' test for when you've already bought the mattress and taken it home. Which usually isn't a problem with known brands offering sleep trails but Aldi doesn't offer a sleep trial, just the returns policy which I went over above.

At this price, we wouldn't recommend this mattress. This price crosses over into the realm of companies that specialise in mattress in a box for a similar price (specifically if  they're on sale). You can find a few in our mattress in a box review

Aldi Mattress Toppers

Since toppers are usually available from retail brands, we like to include them. However, Aldi offers one Kirkton House topper with an Oeko-Tex certification for $70. Here is a look at our mattress topper review, which is great for more information.
