Best Mattress In Australia Awards by Sleep Society

I am delighted to welcome you to the Australian Best Mattress Awards 2023 by Sleep Society! With so many options and confusing mattress marketing jargon to go through, it’s only natural to feel overwhelmed. We started this site for precisely this reason a few years ago. We have reviewed many mattresses, and we think it's about time we create our mattress awards so that you can make an informed choice.

Best mattress overall: Emma Comfort 🏆

The Emma Comfort mattress is the ‘Best Mattress Overall’ winner for 2023. Taking the top spot from the Emma Original as the new flagship product and our best mattress is the Emma Comfort! With over eight million nights on an Emma mattress and 45,000+ customers, Emma has taken that feedback and made the Emma Comfort exclusive to Australia.

The Emma Comfort has a softer comfort top layer and a firmer base to provide better back support and breathability in the mattress. The 2 layers are Point-elastic Airgocell Foam and supportive HRX comfort foam with a depth of 25 cm. Despite the fewer layers than the original, you'll still be incredibly supported throughout the night, with zonal support for your spine, hips, and shoulders staying aligned and supported.

Outside of that, the Emma Comfort didn’t win the award just for being a well designed and excellent mattress. Another consideration was the price point and the value for money compared to the mattress market, and it’s competitively priced! Furthermore, you get a 100-night trial period, a 10-year warranty, free no-contact delivery, and you can pay later with Zip or Klarna. That’s why it’s our best mattress overall for 2023.

Best value: Origin

Winner of the ‘Best Value Mattress’ category for 2023 is the Origin mattress. Australians can benefit from Origin's a high-quality hybrid mattress without spending a lot of money. Hybrids are generally more expensive than foam mattresses because of the additional cost of pocket springs. With that being said, as we went over in our Origin mattress review its still cheaper than most foam mattresses, and that’s why it’s our best value pick!

What are the drawbacks? Well honestly, not many. However, the main one for me is that you cant remove the cover, so you need to make sure you don’t spill liquids on the mattress or just get a mattress protector.

Also, it looks like a quality mattress and feels like one. To top it off, you get a 120-night trial and a 15-year warranty.

Best luxury: Dusk and Dawn Signature

The Dusk and Dawn Signature mattress is the ‘Best Luxury Mattress’ winner for 2023. A total of 6 layer mattress (not including edge support and the 3d mesh cover) is an impressive 38cm thick and weighs approximately 60kg for the Queen size. If that's not enough, it’s also made in Australia with Australian wool and materials. For this reason and the unique quality materials used, it’s our best luxury pick.

The main drawback of this mattress is that it’s a luxury choice and not budget-friendly (depending on how you look at it). If you’re looking for an Aussie made mattress with all the bells and whistles that will last ten years, then paying $2,500 will equal 0.68 a day over its lifespan.

Best hybrid mattress: Macoda

Macoda is the winner of the 'Best Hybrid Mattress' award for 2022. In recent years, Macoda has grown from strength to strength. It has a bamboo cover, latex, memory foam with gel infusion, high-density support foam, transition layer, and pocket springs. As a result, it is soft yet supportive. Nonetheless, everyone's preferences vary. You may want something a little firmer or softer. No problem. Just unzip and swap the layers around.

What made it win this award? It's simple! The quality of the mattress and its excellent support. You get free delivery and a 100-night trial period, which gives you a potential 3-month window to decide whether you like it or not. You can return it and get a full refund if you are not satisfied with it. Also, Macoda offers a 10-year warranty, proving their commitment to their customers.

Best for hot sleepers: Emma Diamond

The Emma Hybrid Diamond is the ‘Best Mattress For Hot Sleepers’ winner for 2023. This is because of the Diamond Degree® tech that has gone into the mattress. The tech maintains the ideal sleeping temperature throughout your REM cycles, enabling you to sleep longer in the deep sleep phase and wake up more rested!

How does it do this? Emma Sleep's high-quality materials and testing team certainly contribute to this. On top, there is diamond and graphite-infused memory foam. Next is Adaptive comfort foam, then pocket springs and the base is the HRX foam. This mattress wicks away excess heat and has a low rolling resistance, so if you involuntarily toss and turn during sleep, it will require less effort from your body, meaning you will be less likely to wake yourself up or wake up your partner in the middle of the night.

Best latex: Peacelily

The Peacelily mattress is our ‘Best Latex Mattress’ winner for 2023. This is a 100% natural latex rubber, with GOTS certified 100% organic cotton fabric and wadding. Latex does tend to be on the firmer side; however, you can adjust the firmness (medium or firm) when you flip the mattress.

Furthermore, the Peacelily has 3 premium layers, all pure latex, without polyurethane foams, memory foams, chemical flame retardants or harmful chemical adhesives. Handcrafted, sustainable and Australian-owned.

Topping it off, you get free delivery, 100-night trial, and an impressive 25 year warranty. That’s because latex mattresses are not only eco-friendly but built to last!

Best mattress for back pain:  Zero Gravity

The Zero gravity mattress is the ‘Best Mattress For Back Pain’ winner for 2023. The Australian back doctor and other practitioners across Australia have recommended it to advocate the Zero Gravity mattress, and this is because of the Highest Graded Material Density 5th Gen True HD ACPT.

Note: just because of the reasons above, it’s our pick for back pain doesn’t mean it will solve the problem. However, having a pressure-relieving mattress like this will help compare to a non-support mattress.
